Soleà . . . Fandangos . . . Alegrìas . . . Bulerìa . . . Sevillanas . . . Zambra . . . Tanguillos . . . Farruca – names of dances, songs and guitar music of Andalusia in southern Spain known to the world as the art of flamenco – names that evoke a mixture of pleasure, excitement, deep reflection, nostalgia, sadness, calm or humor – frenzied, wry, or gentle – depending on the form (palo, or genre, of which dozens remain) . Before modern times wrought artistic revolutions commensurate with changes in the world around – innovations necessary, many believe, for the survival of the art- when the first and second generations of Spanish gypsy (calè, or Roma) and other Andalusian (payo, or non-gypsy) flamenco guitarists to record their music did so in the 1930s, the music, perhaps, might have sounded like this – maybe, way back when, they played it like that, the great Spanish gypsy flamenco guitarists of the twentieth century: Ramòn Montoya, Diego del Gastor, Niño Ricardo, Sabicas, Esteban Sanlùcar, Mario Escudero and others known or unknown – more simply, and, some say, with more soul in each of the notes that came out of the guitar . . .
